About Moonhiker |

I am a paradox who is not easily categorized. Though I have no children of my own, I deeply care about young people. I have spent most of my life working with adolescents, in such positions as a juvenile probation officer, youth minister, and school bus driver. *** I am committed to Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, but have little use for "brand name" Christianity or the institutionalized church. I find house churches to be more congruent with the biblical values of the early church as expressed in the New Testament. *** I have no desire to live a wealthy life style, but will gladly earn all the money I can in honest and ethical ways so that I might have more with which to help the many less blessed people in the world (including the forty thousand who starve to death each day of the year).

General
I have no interest in spectator sports except for occasionally watching something out of the ordinary (such as gymnastics, high diving, or ski jumping), but passionately enjoy outdoor activities myself such as hiking, backpacking, canoeing, and rock climbing. I especially enjoy introducing people to the joys of night hiking under a full moon--hence my nickname as "moonhiker." And I still run about three and a half miles some 3 or 4 times a week. *** I have been interested in health and nutrition since I was a teenager, and continue to read avidly in the constantly growing body of scientific evidence that ill health does not have to be a part of growing old. "We are what we eat"--physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually (or even more accurately, we are what we digest of what we eat, for the food, literal or otherwise, does one no good unless it results in healthy growth). *** I am deeply concerned over injustice anywhere including racial discrimination, and over the staggering fact that one in 99 adults in the U.S. is currently behind bars in our penal system--a much higher incarceration rate than any other nation (including China, Russia, and Iran). I support the principles and efforts of JusticeFellowship.org as the best way to change this very alarming and deplorable situation. If we do not choose to become part of the solution to the injustice all around us, we are then part of the problem.

Music
Classical, spiritual (including old hymns such as AMAZING GRACE), and occasionally popular music. My favorite songs are THE ROSE, and THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM, and the enchanting Celtic music by Enya, especially SHEPHERD MOONS.

Movies
I especially appreciate movies which shed light on history, such as AMAZING GRACE (the origin of the song by that title and how slavery was ended in England), THE SAVING OF PRIVATE RYAN (a grim and heroic story of WWII), TO END ALL WARS (another brutal but inspiring true story from WWII), and the documentary BEYOND THE GATES OF SPLENDOR (how the martyrdom of five young missionaries by a primitive jungle tribe resulted in saving that tribe from self-extinction by their own merciless homicidal hatred that was killing 6 of every 10 adults in the tribe).

Books
In recent years I've especially enjoyed historical fiction, but my favorite books are true stories which illustrate the triumph of good over evil, particularly the power of love and forgiveness to overcome hatred and hostility. Classic examples are LOVING GOD, DANGEROUS GRACE, and THE BODY, all by Charles Colson, THROUGH GATES OF SPLENDOR by Elisabeth Elliott (the wife of one of the five young missionaries mentioned above in the movie section), BRUCHKO and its sequel, BRUCHKO AND THE MOTILONE MIRACLE, both by Bruce Olson (regarded by many as the most amazing and significant missionary story of the last hundred years).
